Courthouse Restoration

An initiative of the Centre County Commissioners

Restoration Begins on the Centre County Courthouse!

The structure and the surrounding courtyard will see repair and replacement, with some pretty substantial modifications planned. The preliminary architectural analysis work has been completed, as evidenced by tarps covering an area where the steps were removed in an effort to determine what type of foundation lay beneath. As major restoration begins, the entire courtyard will be blocked off.

Renovation plans include bolstering the base beneath the portico (porch) and re-installation and proper alignment of all the granite treads, as well as replacement of the marble slabs composing the porch floor.

The eight 26' columns will have the stucco removed down to the cut limestone base and will be re-stuccoed.

The building's facade will be patched and repainted a creamy white, in keeping with the historic colors available in the early 1900's.

The clock tower (cupola) will be repainted, and the stain on the copper dome will be cleaned. The trout weathervane will be removed, cleaned, and replaced on a new stainless steel mast with a collar to separate the dissimilar metals to prevent further staining. The collar will also tighten the fit so that it no longer lists to one side.

The current asphalt roof shingles will be replaced with copper shingles, consistent with the 1909-1911 renovation.
